Wishing Well / Horsewatering Trough
179 Ocean Road
The wishing well, or horse-watering trough, at the intersection of Ocean Road and South Pier Road
is a massive, square structure built of undressed rocks, resembleing a giant well head. It has an
arched opening in each side and a pyramid-shaped roof. It is shown, at left, in front of Greene's
Inn, which burned down in 1980.
The trough was probably built around 1888, at about the same time as Greene's Inn, and may also
have been designed by Boston architect William Gibbons Preston.
